Original title: Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street · Chasing Madoff · Madoff, l'homme qui valait 65 milliards · Type: documentary series and documentaries · Created by: Joe Berlinger (serial), Jeff Prosserman (Chasing Madoff) · Usefulness for traders: ★★★★☆

What it's about

Bernard Madoff ran the biggest Ponzi scheme in history: for years he paid “profits” out of new clients' money, and paper losses reached about $65 billion. The Netflix series (2023, 4 episodes) tells the whole story. “Chasing Madoff” (2010) focuses on Harry Markopolos, the analyst who warned regulators for years. A 2014 French documentary tells the story from a European perspective.

What it has to do with markets

Markopolos noticed that Madoff's reported returns were too smooth to be real for the strategy he supposedly used. For years the regulators didn't act. It's a lesson in analysis: numbers that look too good need checking.

Lessons for traders

What to watch out for

The Netflix series contains dramatised scenes. “Chasing Madoff” is the best lesson in analytical scepticism.
