Pi (1998)
Trader's Film Library #9 · Markets and trading in fiction. A psychological portrait of the pursuit of a perfect pattern.

Original title: Pi · Type: film · Created by: Darren Aronofsky · Usefulness for traders: ★★★☆☆
What it's about
Brilliant mathematician Max Cohen searches for a pattern that will predict the stock market. His obsession attracts a Wall Street firm and a group of mystics, and drives him to the brink of madness.
What it has to do with markets
The film is a metaphor for the obsession with finding patterns in chaos. It's exactly the mechanism I call the clustering illusion in the Atlas of biases: the brain sees patterns even where there are none.
Lessons for traders
- not every pattern in the data is real (the clustering illusion, Atlas of biases #4)
- an obsession with the “perfect system” harms your health and your results
- the market has no hidden code to crack
What to watch out for
An art film, black and white, unsettling. It's not about trading, but about a mind that wants too badly to understand it.
