COT report

Definition. A weekly report from the US CFTC showing the structure of open positions in futures markets, broken down by participant group.

How it works

The report shows positions as of Tuesday and is published on Friday afternoon US time. Among other things, it shows the positions of funds and hedgers.

Example

Extreme positioning by one group of participants is sometimes analysed as context over a horizon of weeks and months.

What to watch out for

The data is several days old and concerns a long horizon. It has no use for intraday decisions.
