FOMC (Fed decision)

Definition. The US Federal Reserve committee that decides on interest rates. It has 8 scheduled meetings a year.

How it works

The statement is released at 2:00 PM New York time (usually 20:00 in Warsaw), and half an hour later the Fed Chair's press conference begins. Several times a year the committee members' projections are also published.

Example

The market often reacts twice: to the statement itself at 2:00 PM and to the remarks during the press conference at 2:30 PM. The two reactions can go in opposite directions.

What to watch out for

It's one of the most important events for markets. Volatility during and after the statement can be very high.
