Replay training: how to practise reading the market outside the session
An athlete doesn't train only during matches, and a pilot spends hundreds of hours in a simulator. Traders often learn only during the session, with real risk and no way to stop the clock. Session replays – playing back historical data as if it were happening live – change that.

Deliberate practice
The psychologist Anders Ericsson described deliberate practice as a key element on the road to mastery: working on a specific skill just beyond your current level, with immediate feedback and many repetitions. Simply “doing your thing” for years doesn't produce the same results as conscious training of selected elements.
Five steps
- Choose one situation or skill, e.g. price's reaction to the previous day's VAH, or recognising absorption.
- Replay the session, pausing it before the key moment.
- Decide: write down what you would do and why before you see what happens next.
- Compare: check what happened next. Judge the process and the quality of your read, not whether you were “right”.
- Repeat: dozens of similar situations instead of one.
What this training gives you
- Repetitions. In an hour of replays you'll work through more situations of a given type than in a week of live trading.
- No pressure from results. You learn to read the market without the emotions of risk, then carry that skill into the live session.
- Control over time. You can pause, rewind and look at details that slip past in real time.
Limitations
- A replay can't fully recreate the emotions of a real session. That's why it complements live work rather than replacing it.
- It's easy to “cheat” in training when you know what happens next. Choose sessions you don't remember, and always write down your decision before revealing the outcome.
Where to train
Many platforms, including Sierra Chart and NinjaTrader, have a historical data replay feature. Session recordings in the 🎬 Recordings archive complement this: you pause at the moment I comment on a situation and compare your read with mine.
Exercise
Choose one situation and analyse 20 examples of it on replays over a week. Record in your journal how many times your read was sound in process terms and what you learned. Post the most interesting examples to 🔍 Your chart for review.
