Gambling on Screen: Uncut Gems, Two for the Money, The Gambler
Trader's Film Library #68 · Risk, probability and gambling. Three warnings: this is what trading looks like once it has turned into gambling.

Original title: Uncut Gems · Two for the Money · The Gambler · Type: films · Created by: Josh and Benny Safdie, D.J. Caruso, Karel Reisz · Usefulness for traders: ★★★☆☆
What it's about
Three films about gambling. “Uncut Gems” (2019): a New York jeweller (Adam Sandler) addicted to sports betting, who escalates the risk in every scene. “Two for the Money” (2005): a former athlete (Matthew McConaughey) becomes a sports-betting “expert” (with Al Pacino). “The Gambler” (1974): a lecturer addicted to gambling (James Caan).
What it has to do with markets
These are cautionary films. They show mechanisms every trader should recognise in themselves: chasing losses, escalating stakes, euphoria after a win and the belief that “this time it'll work”.
Lessons for traders
- escalating risk after a loss (the break-even effect, Atlas of biases #38)
- “tipsters” sell a certainty that doesn't exist
- addiction to the thrill of the game is a signal to get professional help (Trader fitness, Performance #2)
What to watch out for
Intense, exhausting cinema. If you recognise these patterns in yourself, contact an addiction specialist.
