Crypto in Documentaries: Banking on Bitcoin, Cryptopia, Money Electric and Arte productions
Trader's Film Library #69 · Crypto. The history of bitcoin and the bubbles around it.

Original title: Banking on Bitcoin · Cryptopia · Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery · Type: documentaries · Created by: Christopher Cannucciari (2016), Torsten Hoffmann (2020), Cullen Hoback (2024) · Usefulness for traders: ★★☆☆☆
What it's about
“Banking on Bitcoin” (2016) tells the early history of bitcoin and its pioneers. “Cryptopia” (2020) contrasts blockchain enthusiasts and sceptics. “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” (HBO, 2024) searches for bitcoin's creator and names a specific person, who denies it. Arte's shorter documentaries about crypto and the NFT market are also worth watching.
What it has to do with markets
The crypto market is a textbook example of speculative manias and bubbles, such as NFTs. For an index futures trader it's above all a lesson in crowd psychology and the risks of unregulated markets.
Lessons for traders
- a speculative mania looks similar in every market (herding, Atlas of biases #31)
- unregulated markets carry extra risks: exchanges, fraud, manipulation
- a vision of technology isn't a valuation of an asset
What to watch out for
“Money Electric”'s claim about bitcoin's creator is disputed and unconfirmed.
