Day types

Definition. A classification of sessions by how the market builds its range and profile during the day. The best known comes from Market Profile theory (J. Dalton).

How it works

Types include the normal day, normal variation day, trend day, double distribution day, neutral day and non-trend day. How the first hour (the Initial Balance) is built helps you form an early hypothesis about the day type.

Example

A narrow Initial Balance and price consistently moving in one direction, with a thin, elongated profile, are the features of a trend day.

What to watch out for

We only know the day type for certain after the close. During the session it's a hypothesis that keeps being updated.
