Opening range

Opening range

Definition. The price range of the first minutes of the regular session, e.g. the first 5, 15 or 30 minutes.

How it works

The first minutes of the regular session are when big liquidity enters. The opening range shows where the market started the day and how violently. It's shorter than the Initial Balance, which covers the whole first hour.

Example

A break out of the first 30 minutes' range that holds can indicate one side's initiative.

What to watch out for

False breaks of the opening range are common. Their significance depends on the context and the order flow.
