Trading bots, Expert Advisors and AI: what is true and what is marketing
A trading bot is a program that places orders by itself according to coded rules. An Expert Advisor is a bot on the MetaTrader platform. “AI in trading” is mostly marketing for off-the-shelf bots or, increasingly, scams. Automation doesn't create an edge; it just executes a rule someone came up with.
What it is
Professional algorithmic trading exists and accounts for a huge share of exchange volume, but it's run by firms with infrastructure, data and research teams. Bots sold online are a completely different category.
The Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) has repeatedly warned about fake “AI-powered” investment platforms advertised using the images of well-known people. The KNF public warning list can be checked on its website.
How people use it
- off-the-shelf bots and EAs bought online
- grid bots on crypto exchanges
- “AI” that's supposed to make money by itself
- your own strategies automated in TradingView and MetaTrader
What the research and evidence say
The results bot sellers present are usually backtests or short periods on selected accounts. If a bot really had a stable edge, selling it to thousands of customers would quickly destroy it. Research on data mining shows how easy it is to build a great-looking backtest with no edge at all.
Weaknesses
- the edge is in the rule, not the automation
- sellers' backtests are fitted to history
- some “AI” offers are scams
- an automated system won't recognise a change in market conditions unless its rule provides for it
What order flow shows
Professional algorithms on futures exchanges are largely built on order flow data: the order book, the flow of trades, changes in liquidity. A bot sold online usually runs on candlestick chart indicators. The difference in data quality is enormous.
How to use it sensibly
- check whether the firm is on a regulator's warning list (in Poland, the KNF)
- don't trust a backtest without out-of-sample results
- if you automate, automate your own tested rule

Frequently asked questions
Do trading bots work?
A bot executes a rule. If the rule has no edge, the bot just loses faster. Off-the-shelf bots from the internet rarely have properly documented results.
Can AI make money in the market by itself?
Funds use machine learning, but with teams, data and infrastructure. Regulators such as the KNF often flag “AI that makes money for you” offers as scams.
What is an Expert Advisor?
A program that trades automatically on the MetaTrader platform according to coded rules.
