Tilt

Trader's Glossary · Psychology

Tilt

Definition. A state in which emotions take control of decisions and the trader acts against their own plan. The term comes from poker.

How it works

Tilt builds gradually: from tension, through frustration, to off-plan decisions. Stress weakens the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control.

Example

After two losses in a row the thought “I have to win this back” appears, and the next decisions are made in a hurry, outside the plan.

What to watch out for

Rules set before the session work best, e.g. a mandatory break after a set number of losses. Breathing techniques and awareness of your body's signals also help.
